About Plumb Farm Learning Center, Greeley, CO

The White-Plumb Farm Learning Center is a Colorado Centennial Farm, which has been operated by the same family for over a century! The property, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was established in 1881 by Civil War Veteran Charles White as a turn-of-the-century tree claim. History

White-Plumb Farm Learning Center is a Colorado Centennial Farm that was operated by the same family for over 100 years before being donated to the City of Greeley Museums! The farmhouse on the estate has been renovated significantly over the last 2 years, and the outbuildings have been repurposed for possible education programs.

Civil War Veteran Charles White settled the property in 1881 as a turn-of-the-century tree claim. The Timber Culture Act of 1873 was enacted as a follow-up to the Homestead Act. Homesteaders could meet the criteria for an extra 160 acres of land under the Timber Culture Act if they planted trees on at least 1/4 of their property. When Charles A. White established his tree claim in 1881, he was only obligated to plant 10 acres of trees. Each side of White's property is bordered by ash and cottonwood trees.

The house was designed by Bessie Smith, Greeley's first female architect, for $2,500. On the farm, the family raised farm animals and planted alfalfa, seed potatoes, and beans, sugar beets, as well as other vegetables.

In 1983, the descendants of Charles White gave the City of Greeley 2.5 acres of the original tree claim for historical, museum, and cultural purposes. Presently, the property serves as a community garden, a rental space for events, and a learning center.

Tourism Information

Private parties and scheduled educational events are welcome. Daily from sunrise to dusk, the grounds are open.
