History
The Glenmere Park Association proposed to construct a steam-generating electrical plant to provide power to the community in July 1908. Despite the failure of their proposal, association members who were keen gardeners and botanists opted to turn the land into a park, which has since become one of Greeley's most unusual public spaces.
Glenmere's architecture began to take shape in 1909, based on landscape architect C.B. Blake's instructions to "avoid straight lines in planting" and "leave the best views open." This was a departure from earlier city park designs, which were frequently modeled on street grid patterns. The new Glenmere Park will be planned out in a curvilinear pattern, with streets matching the land's contours.
Raymond U. Williams, a landscape architect from Greeley, developed Glenmere's plant landscape. The several various species of trees planted along the banks of the gorgeous pond, to Williams' credit, contribute a lot to the park's charm. In 1932, Williams received 147 tree donations, which he planted. Every contributor selected the tree they wished to plant.
Each tree is labeled with the donor's name on a map of the landscape design. Elm, crab apple, birch, juniper, spruce, and a variety of other trees were selected by the donors.
Presently, we appreciate the park's unique design, which more closely represents actual nature. Consider what tree you would choose to beautify a public landscape for years to come as you sit beneath the Glenmere trees. (Source: greeleytribune.com)
