Exhibits
The museum houses a diverse collection of artifacts and displays from both real and model railroading. Within the museum’s walls are several stories to be told.
Department 56 Christmas Villages Collection
Michelle Kempema, the museum’s executive director, describes the collection as “a wonderful treasure” and anticipates that “seeing the villages will become a Christmas ritual for the public.” The Department 56 Christmas Villages Collection includes the entire collection of Heritage Villages, which includes Christmas in the City, Dickens’ Village, North Pole Village, Seasons Bay Village, Alpine Village, and New England Village.
The Harrises of Lincoln, Nebraska, began their collecting in 1984 with the acquisition of a single church. They decided to choose the Colorado Model Railroad Museum to hold their collection because they believed it was the ideal setting for their distinctive train layout communities near Greeley CO.
